How to Use the Face of a Child?
Some days ago, I found a leaflet, courtesy of HEP (Croatian Electric Power Supply company) in my mailbox. There was a photo of a boy on the cover, munching on his pencil, with the words “Where does the current flow?” floating around his head as a line of thought. HEP’s leaflet was a nice surprise, actually. But only on the outside. Inside, there was another story inside...
The face of a child sitting in his school desk was used by HEP to protect their own interests. Although we lack the confirmation at this point, it seems that the “theft” has provoked HEP to invest in purchase of the most modern measuring equipment, used to discover the fact that the plebs is involved in the activity of unauthorized use – theft of electricity.

A plan was made to stop that, based on our long “love thy neighbour” tradition. The boy from the cover is given a chance, inside the leaflet, to report on the neighbour that used more electricity than he purchased. The leaflet says, in a tone of an old teacher, that the unauthorized use of electricity is dangerous, illegal and expensive. Expensive for the fact that, once discovered, a loooooooot of money is charged for the stolen electricity. In says further: “the theft of electricity creates damages for ALL buyers that pay their bills regularly.”
To avoid taking us away from the our favourite TV shows and leaving the comfortable armchairs, HEP provides a simple form with the leaflet, and it is on us to fill in the name of our thieving neighbour and a brief description of the incriminated activity that we should report in.
Well aware that even that amenity will hardly avert our attention from the TV set, HEP calls in its trump card: money. HEP promises that you can earn some significant bounty if you report in your neighbour, or anybody for that matter.
So, a child can learn, while in school, where the current flows and will never forget to report on those who don’t know the answer to that question.
