Students Believe Their Professors are Corrupt
Dario Lazic, the Coordinator of the “Survey of Banja Luka University Students’ Perceptions of Corruption” Project, which was conducted on a sample of 299 students in June 2004, emphasized at the presentaiton of the results that only 1,3 percent of the polled students say that there is not corruption at the University. 20,4 percent of the polled students believe that there is evident corruption, 9,7 % think that the corruption is intensive, while five percent refused to answer this question. Answering questions about the manifestations of corruption, the students quoted the nepotism at exams the most common form of corruption, followed by bribing professors at admission exams, as well as, although less common, the requirement to purchase “obligatory reading books and texts,” as well as buying out university diplomas. Another disappointing result is the fact that 42,1 percent of the students said that they would take no action in case they are asked for a bribe, while only 3,7% said that they would immediately go to the authorities. Only about ten professors and approximately that number of students were present at the presentation of the research, held yesterday at the Law Faculty in Banja Luka. The Ministry of Education and Culture of RS didn’t send a representative at the event. Before the open discussion on the subject of corruption in the higher educations institutions, the participants and the visitors were addressed by Dragoljub Mirjanic, the Rector of the Banja Luka University, and Zoran Lipovac, the Deputy District Attorney of Banja Luka. |
