OneWorld SEE

OneWorld – Southeast Europe (SEE)

OneWorld SEE is regional edition of OneWorld.net that brings you news and information on the civil sector in Southeast Europe.

OneWorld SEE is a result of the SEE Initiative that OneWorld International started in June 2000. Since then, the project has developed two components:

- Radio SEE - seeradio.oneworld.net, multilingual web-based audio platform for exchange of radio programmes in the region
- OneWorld SEE - OneWorld SEE, research and establishment of a web-portal for the civil sector in SEE.

Over the course of the past three years, the radio component of the project had noticeable success, thanks to its team of eight local coordinators that work in the countries of the region (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro and Kosovo).

The second component went through the phase of extensive research - Use of ICTS by NGOs in SEE which resulted in this portal.

Over the last year, OneWorld International handed over the management of the SEE Initiative to Unimondo, OneWorld Centre in Italy, which further developed the project, together with a team of local editors. The mision of Unimondo is dissemination of pluralist information on sustainable development, environment, peace and human rights.

UniMondo was involved in the reporting on activities in SEE for several years, through its cooperation with Osservatorio Sui Balcani and other Italian NGO partners that work in the Balkans.

Unimondo’s i OneWorld International’s long-term vision is to leave the management of this portal to a consortium of local NGOs in the region, which would later form the OneWorld Centre for SEE.

What is the structure of OneWorld?

OneWorld is an international network of cooperative centres, supported by OneWorld International.

OneWorld International has two aspects:
i) OneWorld International Foundation
ii) OneWorld International Ltd.

OneWorld International Foundation is a guarantee limited company. It has no shares: it is controlled by its members rather than shareholders, and it is managed in accordance to its Statute (which is called the Articles of Association in the UK).

OneWorld International Foundation has total ownership rights over OneWorld International Ltd. The latter is a non-profit organization which returns to the Foundation all its revenue.

Existing Centres

The OneWorld network, at this moment, consists of eleven OneWorld Centres:
OneWorld Africa (Lusaka, Zambia)
OneWorld Austria (Vienna, Austria)
OneWorld Canada (Montreal, Canada)
OneWorld Netherlands (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
OneWorld Finland (Helsinki, Finland)
OneWorld Italy (Unimondo) (Trento, Italy)
OneWorld Latin America (San Jose, Costa Rica)
OneWorld South Asia (New Delhi, India)
OneWorld Spain (Barcelona, Spain)
OneWorld UK (London, UK)
OneWorld US (Washington, USA)

Each centre has its own Partnership Manager who administers partners in the region covered by the Centre. OneWorld International seeks those partners that don’t belong to any other centre.

An editorial team works in each centre and edits the local editions (if they have one. The editors also make available the materials from OneWorld’s global sections to their partners. One example would be the thematic channels produced by some centres. The Indian Channels Editor, for instance, edits the OneWorld Learning Channel from India, but he also includes the relevant materials provided by OneWorld partners from all over the world.

Therefore, it is essential that various centres in the network should work together, in independent and cooperative manner. One of the chief goals of OneWorld International is to provide for a global exchange, both on practical technological level, but also through team work, exchange and dissipation of knowledge.

New Centres

OneWorld - SEE: a new Centre?

One long-term goal of the OneWorld SEE project is to establish a new centre in Southeast Europe. The Centre should lean on a consortium of local NGOs, which will be responsible for creation of strategy and vision for future sustainability of the centre.

In order to be considered for possible membership in the consortium, the organizations have to comply to the OneWorld criteria set by OneWorld International Foundation.

An OneWorld centre, its owners and subsidiaries ought to:
- be a part of the civil society
- achieve goals, implement activities, join associations and use the employment strategies consistent with OneWorld vision and values
- can’t give away their share of ownership
- can’t have formal religious, commercial or political affiliations that may jeopardize their independence
- can’t advocate violence

Organizations interested in more information about the possibility of becoming part of the consortium, should consult Valentina Pellizzer, OneWorld SEE Project Manager.
