Law on Volunteering Adopted

On May 18, the Croatian Sabor (the Parliament) adopted the Law on Volunteering that regulates the status of all legal and physical persons involved in organized volunteering.
This is the first such legislation in Croatia to regulate the definitions of terms related to volunteering, the principles of volunteering, conditions, rights and duties of volunteers and organizers of volunteering, the terms and conditions of volunteering agreements, Ethics Code, certificates, state awards and support and supervision of implementation. The Law defines volunteering as free investment of one’s personal time, work, knowledge and skills to pursue activities or provide services for benefit of other persons or the general public, conducted without conditions for payment of monetary compensation or other compensation in terms of goods or property titles. Having in mind that there was no legal framework for volunteering previously, certain volunteering activities were regulated in a number of individual laws that defined volunteering in a variety of manners and treated it in a number of approaches. The adoption of the Law was greeted by the Croatian Youth Network and Volunteering Centre Zagreb. “We believe that this Law will greatly contribute to further development of volunteering in Croatia and assist all of us – volunteers and organizers of volunteering activities, to better pursue our activities”, said the two organizations in a joint statement. |
