Development Labour and Gender – First National Debate

The MULTIMEDIA Centre of Performing Arts, under the auspices of its From Female Point of View project, organizes the first national debate on the topic “Development, Labour and Gender”. The debate will take place in the Municipal Council Hall in Stip, on April 24, 2007, starting at 12:00 hours.

The project is based on the idea of gender equality and raising social issues, using art as a tool for social change, with the debate focused on issues of women and labour. The debate aims to make a critical overview of the relationship between industrialization in Macedonia and gender, the appearance of factories dominated by women (especially young women), and to survey the concept of economic violence in Stip’s own textile industry.

Relevant NGOs from Skopje and Stip, the Municipal Commission on Equal Opportunities for Men and Women, the Stip Public Advocate, the Labour Inspectorate and representatives of the textile industry are expected to participate in the debate.

The main goal of the debate and the project in general is to increase the public awareness about existing problems of women, to demonstrate how artists can contribute to rising awareness through participatory rights, and how they could contribute to reevaluation of cultural and social changes in Macedonia and Europe in general.
