NGOs Demand From Authorities to Find Attackers of Dejan Anastasijevic Urgently

Serbian NGOs demand from the competent authorities to act and discover the perpetrators, the background the people who ordered the attempt on the life of Dejan Anastasijevic, journalist at “Vreme” weekly, on the night of April 14.

“If they fail to do that, Serbia will continue to sink in the politics of crime which was never fully renounced by its political elite. Serbia may also lose the legitimacy for its claim of a place in the company of civilized European countries”, says the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia.

According to Committee’s public statement, it is obvious that Anastasijevic and his reporting is a major obstacle to the prevailing interpretation of wars in former Yugoslavia that prohibits any connection being made between crimes and state institutions.

The Helsinki Committee adds that the attempted assassination of Anastasijevic - who excelled in his reporting on the trial of the murderers from allegedly paramilitary “Scorpions” unit and himself appeared as witness of the prosecution in the trial of Slobodan Milosevic in the Hague – is yet another contribution to the atmosphere of lynch towards all those that think differently in Serbia. The Committee has warned about that climate of intolerance for quite some time now.

Miljenko Dereta from Civic Initiatives wonders whether there is hope at all that the attempts to solve this case would differ much from Curuvija, Pantic, or Dada Vujasinovic’s case.

“We have heard so many such promises from the authorities, who pledge to turn the earth and heavens to find the perpetrators, but we rarely saw any results. It is of utmost importance for all citizens, for Serbia, that those who planted hand grenades on the windowsill, and those who inspired or ordered the attack to be arrested and brought to justice, for it would mark the establishment of independent and healthy state institutions. It is the highest time to do that”, says Dereta in a public statement issued by Civic Initiatives.
