Vojvodina Government Adopts Draft Gender Equality Law

The Vojvodina Executive Council (the provincial government) adopted the Draft Law on Gender Equality, proposed by the Provincial Secretariat of Labour, Employment and Gender Equality.

The Secretary Snezana Lakicevic-Stojacic believes this is an important anti-discrimination legislation which will assist the adaptation of the whole legal framework in the area of gender equality to international standards and EU legislation.

"The adoption of this Draft would allow for application of highest possible standards and provide the necessary instrument in the implementation of an active equal opportunity policies in all areas of social life and guarantee the equality of sexes and legal protection for that equality”, says Lakicevic-Stojacic.

She adds that the adoption of the Draft would prevent discrimination and prohibit any restrictions of rights based on unequal treatment of sexes.

The adoption was preceded by a public debate that took over a year to complete, with participation of the NGO sector, associations working in the area of gender equality, as well as a number of international and domestic institutions and individuals.

The Executive Council proposed to the Provincial Assembly to submit the Draft, as legal nominator, to Serbian Skupstina for debate and adoption.
