Veto Kostunica Campaign

After the indications that the Democratic Party (DS) and the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) may soon reach agreement on the new Government, in which Vojislav Kostunica would keep the office of the Prime Minister, several NGOs invited the citizens to join their Veto Kostunica campaign.

Although DS won 64 seats in the Skupstina in the January 21 elections, opposed to DSS/Nova Srbija Coalition’s 47, the two-months long negotiations on the composition of the new Government introduced the so-called 6th principle, stating that DS couldn’t hold at the same time the offices of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, i.e. that one of them should go to DSS.

In spite of public denials of such a request, last week there were several indications that DS could accept such a combination, under condition that it has majority of Government portfolios in the future cabinet. The NGOs invited the citizens to send a letter opposing such an agreement to the Democratic Party.

“Those who believe in the future, life, progress, development won... We have to defend their victory! We shouldn’t allow that the future of Serbia becomes a toy in the hands of 40 sleepy MPs from the DSS! We can’t become hostages of Kostunica’s terror over democracy and development in Serbia! Boris Tadic has the responsibility to make a decision, we have the responsibility to deny him the dilemma for whom democratic Serbia voted...”, states the public invitation.

The citizens are invited to print out the letter in as many copies and send it to as many e-mail addresses as possible, so that it could reach all those interested to join the action to prevent the implosion of democracy in the country.

“If 200 letters arrive to DS headquarters in Krunska Street, only the mailman will notice; if 2,000 arrived, the doorman may notice; if 20,000 arrive, some officials and secretaries will notice. If we send more than that, even Tadic will have to notice. It may sound unbelievable, but if each of us that didn’t vote for Kostunica sends a letter, Kostunica will not be Prime Minister”, says the invitation.
