Virtual Employment Office

Last week, the Mjaft! Foundation (the philanthropic branch of Mjaft! Movement) presented the opening of its ambitious "Une Punoj" ("I Work”) project. This initiative will, through an innovative website, create a virtual space where employers and jobseekers can interact in order to jointly improve the unemployment situation in Albania. The site will list all the available labour market opportunities.

The data regarding such opportunities will be regularly uploaded to the www.unepunoj.com website.

This project has been financed by the World Bank and it is the first of its kind in Albania. All the services and information offered by the website will be free.

Representatives from the Mjaft! Foundation, Mjaft! Movement as well as Mr. Nadir Mohamedd (World Bank) were present at the opening of this project. Journalists, businessmen, students and intellectuals were also invited.

Erion Veliaj (MJAFT), in his opening speech, delivered both good news and bad news. “The bad news,” he said, “is that the unemployment rate continues to remain the Albanian people’s main concern, specifically among the youth.”

He summed up the good news by introducing the “Une punoj” project, which he regarded as an effective springboard for the cultivation of a constructive debate regarding work ethics. “I am happy to see that this room is full of people, but I am sure that the coffee shops in Albania are even fuller than this.”

The representative from the World Bank in Albania, Mr. Mohamedd, assured the audience that the institution he represents is confident in its collaboration with Mjaft! Movement, which he described as a “prestigious organization.”

Antuen Skenderi, the director of this project, then explained how the project’s website functions. She also pinpointed the target groups that will benefit from its services.

“During 2004-2005 the unemployment rate was 13% higher than the previous two years and more than 63% of employed people admit to having found their jobs through good connections,” said Skenderi.

The most salient question that she tackled with before undertaking this project was: “Is it job vacancies that are lacking in Albania or is it the lack of information about the labor market opportunities?”
