Women Network Presented its Gender Sensitive Journalism Award

The MAJA MILES Award, presented annually by the Croatian Women Network for achievement in gender sensitive journalism, for 2007 will go to Orlanda Obad from Jutarnji List and Irena Frlan from Novi List, for their systemic and quality promotion of gender and sexual minorities’ equality in the media. The Award is presented on March 8, the International Women’s Day.

Orlanda Obad
Orlanda Obad
Orlanda Obad is known as a woman of indisputable personal integrity and awareness of gender and sexual discrimination taking place in the political times she reports on. She presented her courage as a citizen in her coverage of the Ankica Lepej case (Jutarnji list, 1998), which resulted in her being sued on libel charges. For her interview with Ana Magas, Obad won the “Marija Juric Zagorka” Award for 2005, presented by the Croatian Association of Journalists.

Obad followed the case of Ana Magas from the very beginning to this date, exhibiting great level of gender awareness in the approach and interpretations of statements given by Magas, the Judges, investigators and experts involved in the case. The Women Network believes that the reporting of Orlanda Obad follows the issue of gender and sexual equality in a systemic way and contributes greatly to the development of public awareness and promotion of women human rights.

Irena Frlan
Irena Frlan
Irena Frlan has reported throughout 2006 on events related to rights of sexual minorities, in “Novi List”, “Glas Istre” and “Glas Slavonije”. Her correct reporting, together with statements she gathered from prominent sexual minorities’ rights activists, increased the field for understanding and positive movements in public awareness on rights and needs of sexual minorities.

The objective and documented information presented by Irena Frlan are strong instrument towards achievement of full respect and observance of rights of sexual minorities. Of particular importance is the fact that the information was also published in local media, such as “Glas Slavonije” and “Glas Istre”.
