Municipality of Makedonska Kamenica Migrates to OpenOffice.org

As a result of the training for use of OpenOffice.org, conducted by Metamorphosis Foundation and USAID’s project for successful decentralization - Make Decentralization Work, the Municipality of Makedonska Kamenica started to actively use OpenOffice.org on all computers in the municipal administration.

“After several employees of the municipality of Makedonska Kamenica attended the training for OpenOffice.org they have asked for OpenOffice.org in Macedonian language to be installed on their computers. Now, OpenOffice.org has been installed on all computers, employees have already acquired basic skills and it is easier for them to work since the software is in Macedonian,” said Pero Mitrevski, Mayor of Makedonska Kamenica.

Makedonska Kamenica is a small municipality with 11 personal computers and 1 server. The municipality has system administrator responsible for the computers.

A Survey conducted by Metamorphosis in May 2006 shows that free and open source software is excellent solution for Macedonian municipalities having in mind limited budgets that don’t provide for allocation of resources for purchase of software licenses.
