MDGs Important for EU Integration Process

The European Union membership is a clear priority for Macedonia, but the meeting of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the EU integration should not be perceived as separate agendas, emphasized Maria Luisa Silva Mejias and SNV director Dirk Elsen, at the signing of the agreement for implementation of the second phase of the “MDG Based Planning” project.

They noted that EU integration and the MDGs have the same aim – to fight poverty and social exclusion and to secure greater opportunities for all citizens of Macedonia.

In the first phase of the project, UNDP and SNV supported the process of localization of the Millennium Development Goals in the municipalities of Strumica, Negotino and Gostivar. The main goal of the project is to strengthen partnerships between public, private and civic sectors in the three municipalities and to promote participatory process of creation of local development strategies that would be based on the MDGs.

In the second phase, the project will include four more municipalities that will be selected over the next period of time. Its main goal will be to increase the local authorities’ capacity for use of the MDG-based concept in analysis of social-economic environment, planning policies and strategies, monitoring of results and strengthened links between local ana national planning processes.
