V-Day Marked in Belgrade

To mark this years V-Day, the Belgrade’s Anti Trafiking Centre organizes a screening of World VDay: Until the Violence Stops, film by Abby Epstein, today, February 15, at the REX Cinema, at 19:00 hours. ATC will also screen a recording of last year’s performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues at last years V-Day celebrations.

The film, back in 2003 one of the favourites of the Sundance Film Festival, is a touching and funny story on how The Vagina Monologues grew from a Broadway hit play into V-Day, the international movement to stop violence against women.

It depicts emotionally charged interviews and readings by ordinary women and celebrities (Rosie Peres, Salma Hayek, Rosario Dawson, Jane Fonda and Lisa Gay Hamilton participated) from places as diverse as New York, the Philippines and Kenya. They all bravely disclose their intimate experiences and join forces to break the silence surrounding abuse.

The panel discussion planned to take place after the screenings will include Jelena Bogavac, the Director of the Belgrade’s production, a number of actresses that played the leading roles, but also Ljubisa Rajic and other prominent public personalities.

The “Until the Violence Stops” Campaign is implemented with support by the Freedom House, Mama Cash, Heart and Hand, under the sponsorship by the City of Belgrade and Vojvodina Provincial Government, in cooperation with Yugoslav Drama Theatre (JDP), Youth Centre Belgrade and a number of commercial and media sponsors.
