UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities Promoted

Last Thursday, January 25, the UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities was promoted at the Members of Parliament Club in Skopje.

This UN document was adopted on December 13, 2006, and represents the long-term strategy for the states and their obligations towards the persons with disabilities. The Republic of Macedonia, as UN member-state, is obligated to sign and ratify this Convention. Currently, there are more than 90,000 persons with disabilities living in the country.

Borislav Batic, the President of the National Coordination Body for Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities, emphasized that the Convention meands that all measures shall be taken and applied to eliminate discrimination based on disability, provide access to means designed to increase the mobility of the disabled, as well as other types of assistance by support and technical services.

Nikola Gruevski, the Prime Minister of Macedonia said that the Government intends to place the persons with disabilities in the focus of its activities and will fully support and endorse the ratification of the Convention.
