International Conference on Finding the Truth after the War

The Documenta – Centre for Dealing with the Past, the Humanitarian Law Centre from Belgrade and the Sarajevo based Research and Documentation Centre, organize the Second International Conference on Finding the Truth after the end of war and hostilities, in Zagreb’s Sheraton Hotel, February 8-9, 2007. The first conference was held in Sarajevo in May 2006.

The conference aims to provide the context for the topics related to war-time events and to further the dialogue on efficient instruments that would achieve greater social acceptance of systemic and responsible dealing with recent history in post-Yugoslav countries.

The Conference will discuss a number of topics:
  • Transition Justice – mechanisms of truth-finding – global and regional experience;
  • Importance of facts in truth-finding;
  • Role of war-crimes trials in determination of truths and facts;
  • Regional approaches to presentation of truth;
  • Finding the truth on regional level from the victims’ point of view;
  • Analysis of practices of dealing with the past in legislative bodies;
  • Importance and future of Archives kept at the Hague Tribunal.

All interested to cover the Conference should contact the organizers, in order to regulate press passes and credentials (the limited resources make press credentials obligatory for all reporters).

The Conference will be addressed, among others, by Croatian President Stjepan Mesic; Fausto Pocar, President of the International Criminal Tribunal for former-Yugoslavia; Carla del Ponte, the Head Prosecutor of the Hague Tribunal; Hans Holthuis, ICTY Secretary; and Mladen Bajic, the Head Public Prosecutor of the Republic of Croatia.
