Freedom to Creativity Festival

The third Freedom to Creativity Festival of Free Culture, Science and Technology starts today, January 22, in Zagreb. The Festival, organized by the Multimedia Institute, will end January 27, 2007. The main topic of this year’s festival will be radio frequency spectrum as a public good, the open communication standards and civic participation in creation of media.

Lectures, exhibitions, screenings and workshops at the MM Club, located in the Student Centre, shall present a number of examples of reconquest of the radio frequency spectrum by the citizens, such as amateur radio, pirate radio, “do it yourself” TV and wireless networks.

The regulation of radio frequency currently in place favours the hegemony of big media industry and state control over information and at the same time prevents direct access for broadcasts by the citizens. Although the regulation is based on the questionable assumption that frequencies are restricted resource, the development of communication technology solves the problem of limitation of resources and provides for an opportunity to replace the one-way broadcasts from one to many with two-way communication.

During the Festival, performers of free music and VJs from Croatia, B&H and Serbia will play concerts on the state of the “Mocvara” Club in Zagreb.

Free the airwaves!
