Mjaft! Protests the Energy Crisis
|
Yesterday Mjaft! Movement protested against the nation’s ongoing energy crisis in front of the Prime Minister’s Office. Mjaft! proposed the inauguration of a new Prime Minister for Albania – Pinocchio - as well as the introduction of a new emblem for the Council of Ministers - a picture of a generator, torch and candle to replace the eagle.
At noon today Mjaft! Movement activists placed two 2.5 meter high tripods, shrouded in black cloth, in front of the Prime Minister’s Office as media representatives looked on in suspense, awaiting the unveiling of what lied beneath. The first displayed a symbolic design of a new emblem for the Council of Ministers whereas the second offered an image of Pinocchio below which the words “Prime Minister” were written. As one Mjaft activist loudly proclaimed each of Berisha’s unfulfilled promises, another one symbolically elongated Pinocchio’s nose a few centimeters with a pen to the sound of each of these lies. Besjan Pesha, a Mjaft! Movement activist, stated the following: “Our Prime Minister promised that electricity would be provided 24 hours per day, but he did not keep his promise; the government promised that it would discontinue the use of arbitrarily fixed electric bills, but it continues to utilize them; the government promised to minimize the deficit, but this has not happened either.” When asked whether Mjaft! will continue to organize other protests regarding the energy crisis Pesha confirmed that Mjaft! will not stop protesting until the situation is resolved. One day before the protest Mjaft! Movement held a press conference regarding the energy crisis and urged the Albanian Energy Corporation (AEC) to take responsibility for it. A Mjaft! representative went as far as demanding the immediate resignation of the Corporation’s Executive Director, Andi Beli. According to Mjaft! Movement, the Albanian Energy Corporation is a misnomer – a more accurate name would be the “Albanian Energy Collapse.” Mjaft! expressed both sorrow and concern regarding the intolerable situation that Albania is currently being forced to face. Mjaft! Movement has tirelessly reacted against the Albanian Energy Corporation’s inefficiency. Not only has it demanded an immediate and tangible solution to the problem, but it has also demanded the discontinuation of fixed electric bills, universal penalization, etc. Exactly one year ago Mjaft! representatives held a meeting with the Minister of Energy, Mr. Genc Ruli, during which he promised that these problems would be resolved as soon as possible. And yet another promise goes unfulfilled and Pinocchio’s nose grows a few more centimeters. |
