EDEN Center - Tirana

The Environmental Center for Development Education and Networking – EDEN – was created at the end of 2003 and legally registered in March 2004 by a group of young people. The initiative started as a response to the dilemmas of Milieukontakt Oost Europa regarding the future of its local offices in some countries in Eastern Europe.

The Albanian staff and other involved persons experienced in environment, health and civil society sectors and committed to contribute for the democratization of the civil society and sustainable development of the country decided to continue working on the above mentioned fields.

This lead to the foundation of a local environmental NGO in accordance with Albanian Legislation named EDEN Centre.

Throughout this year EDEN members have worked in three main areas:
  • Local level through cooperation and partnership with other NGOs and local authorities and building its own capacities;
  • National level through participation in different networks, cooperation with other organisations and contribution to the national policies; International level through strengthening partnership with MKOE Amsterdam and establishing contacts with new partners and exchanging information and experiences;
  • Experience gained within Milieukontakt Oost Europa programme and work done until now taught us to smoothly connect all three level in our daily work.

EDEN is a national organization. To fulfill our mission in the society for the time being, we work in close collaboration with eight environmental NGOs, the Municipality of Tirana and local communities in Tirana. At the same time, EDEN is a standing member of WECF (Women of Europe for a Common Future) network, EUROTOX network (aiming to prevent toxic waste disposal), IPEN network and EcoMovement network (aiming to strengthen the voice of civil society in environmental protection and sustainable development and to become a factor in the decision-making processes).

The Executive Board is the highest governing body of the center that operates according to EDEN Statute. The Executive Director is the person charged with the progress and sustainability of the organization.

In order to do steps forward to the fulfillment of the center’s goal and objectives we do have designed a strategic working plan for 2005 -2008.

Three are the thematic pillars that EDEN is focusing and will continue to focus its work for the coming three years:

• Capacity building of NGOs, GOs and other interested groups;
• Environmental Education;
• Waste

“Eden” Mission is the development of a sustainable and healthy environment through building capacities; promoting participatory approach; offering expertise and services to civil society and governmental structures; and lobbying in the national level.

As stated also in the statute of the organization the objectives of the Center are as follows:
