UNFPA Opens Serbian Office

The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) will open a office by the end of this year, having in mind Serbia’s problems with age structure of the population and the “brain-drain” issue.

According to the UNFPA annual report, presented last week, unless a much more serious population policy is put in place, in 20-years time Serbia faces serious problems with its labour force.

”The UNFPA Serbian office will work on the strengthening of capacities for statistical research and technical support in the development of demographic strategy”, said Nikolaj Botev, UNFPA Advisor.

Botev adds that the new office will also work on the problem of intentional abortions and low levels of use of contraception, which remains a “big problem” in Serbia.
