National TV Used Blog as Source of Information

The central news programme of Croatian TV (link http://www.hrt.hr www.hrt.hr) aired a story last Friday, September 29, on the secret agreement between the Government and Deutsche Telecom on the sale of Croatian Telecom (HT) in 1999, which gives HT exclusive right of exploitation of the complete telecommunications infrastructure in the country, including the underground network of distribution-telecommunication channels (DTC).

The DTC network has been the bone of content creating conflict between the Telecom and the local self-governments, which claim that the infrastructure belongs to them, having in mind that the cables pass on their land.

It remains unclear, however, whether the agreement covers exploitation or property rights over the network. The Government hired a special consulting company, which is yet to give its opinion, in spite of the fact that agreed deadline has long passed.

On Friday, the situation finally moved to some resolution when the National Agency for Telecommunications declared that it would be responsible for the use of telecommunications infrastructure. In those cases where the true owner of the land is not known, the Agency will lease the lines. The moeny will go to a special account until the true owner is determined and then the funds will be transferred to the owner.

For us, the most interesting aspect of the report was the fact that HRT quoted a blogger, T-Zombix, who informed about an incident in Varazdin, between the workers of Vodatel company, who inserted optic cable into the existing channels, which was later removed by the workers of T-HT.

This is probably the first instance in Croatia that a blog was used as source of information in the central news programme of the national TV broadcaster.

HRT’s report is available for viewing at http://youtube.com/watch?v=7igF7TTQXHc.
