Fier Citizens Vote For Water!

Although no official date for the Local Elections has been released, the citizens of Fier have already made their choice: they vote for the water. In an action last week, activists of MJAFT Movement put a lot of five-litre bottles in front of the city hall.

The bottles stood for ballot boxes in a special election, since the community was offered two ways of voting - “I bye the water I drink” and the second was: “I drink the water out of the kitchen faucet”.

According to Bledi Hoxha from MJAFT, “over 90% of the “voters” from Fier cast their vote in the bottle marked with “I buy the water I drink”.

This is the last protest organized under the “Albania is thirsty” national campaign. During the protest in Fier the activists distributed some leaflets as the police forces ensured a peaceful protest.

In a similar protest last week in Tirana, MJAFT activists used plastic bottles to construct an aqueduct similar to those built by the Romans centuries ago, in front of the Ministry of Public Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunications.

Earlier this month, MJAFT activists protesting under the auspices of the campaign were attacked by militant activists of the Democratic Party and their banner at the movement’s headquarters in Elbasan Str. was torn down. The banner accused Prime Minister Sali Berisha of a failure to keep his promise to secure 24-a day of uninterrupted water supply.
