EU Presents Visa Negotiations Mandates

The European Commission published the mandates for negotiations on visa regime alleviation and readmission agreements with Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The mandates provide for much simpler and quicker procedure, as well as issuance of multiple entry visas covering longer periods of time for students, researchers, artists and business-people, for travel into the EU.

The new mandates also propose lower tariffs or free visas, as well as a possibility to relieve carriers of diplomatic passports from obligation to apply for visa when traveling to the EU.

EU Ministers of Justice and Internal Affairs are expected to give their opinion on the mandates next Monday, and the mandates, should everything go to plan, will be adopted in September of this year.

Ollie Rehn, EU Expansion Commissioner, estimates that the visa regime alleviations will mean a lot to ordinary citizens, especially in terms of travel, study and doing business in EU countries.
