“The Yes Men” Visit Sarajevo
|
The Youth Information Agency (OIA), in ccoperation with three organizations from Sarajevo - Green Visions, Akcija and ACIPS – have the pleasure to invite you to a public lecture and screening of The Yes Men film, at “Bosna” cinema, Thursday, June 29, at 19:00 hours.
This event you can’t afford to miss. The most creative and subversive activists in the world that use mass media, internet, acting talents and talent for disguises, will present their work in Sarajevo. They will answer questions by people who believe that civic activism is the only option they have in the fight against the ruling bureaucratic and corrupt political elites. In 1999, just before the Seatle Protests, Mike and Andy, better known as The Yes Men, parodied the web-site of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on the GATT.org domain. Many people thought this was the actual website, and started sending them letters with question on a variety of issues related to trade and economy. Eventually, they started receiving official invitations to participate in top level conferences and events. Mike and Andy, university lecturers and anti-globalisation activists, decided to accept such invitations and suddenly became representatives of the organization they so vehemently opposed. They pooled in their savings, bought plane tickets, invented new identities and started the journey. As so-called “WTO experts”, they took place in international conferences in Salzburg, Austria, Sydney, Australia, Tampere, Finland, as well as CNBC and BBC programmes. Mike and Andy used the footage they recorded at all these events to prepare a black humour satirical documentary that brings to the fore the worst aspects of globalized capitalism. The film was shows in a number of prestigious festivals. The programme of THE YES MEN visit to Sarajevo includes: guest appearance in Central Penitentiary (Centralni Zatvor) show on Federal TV, Wednesday, June 28; public lecture and screening at Bosna Cinema, Thursday, June 29; The Yes Men workshop with young B&H activists at ACIPS, 9-13:00 hours, Friday, June 30. This visit was made possible by Green Visions, Akcija, OIA B&H, Open Society Fund B&H and ACIPS. |
