Transitional Justice: Regional Initiatives and Cooperation

The Belgrade office of UNDP organizes, in cooperation with its partners from B&H, Croatia, Montenegro and Kosovo, a three-day conference, Transitional Justice: Regional Initiatives and Cooperation, at the �Sava Centar� in Belgrade, June 13-15, 2006.

The Conference is organized under the auspices of UNDP�s Transitional Justice project, directed at government officials, representatives of the judiciary, civil sector and the general public. High-ranking officials from the region will participate in the conference, together with representatives of international organizations that work in the field of transitional justice and UN officials.

The Conference aims at the creation of conditions for better understanding of the instruments of transitional justice; identification of best methods of their implementation in the region that has passed through a series of wars; improved networking of all actors in the process of creation of a regional network for cooperation between representatives of governments, judiciary, civil sector and international organizations. The application of instruments of transitional justice should contribute to a more successful and accelerated development of countries in the region.

The participants will have an opportunity to exchange experiences with actors of transitional justice processes in other parts of the world and to get introduced to the mechanism of implementation of such processes. The conference will discuss four central topics in the field of transition justice: war crimes trials, reparations, institutional reforms and truth finding process.

This Conference will be the biggest regional gathering of experts in Transitional justice and will be used as a platform for presentation of the study Assessment of Situation in Transitional Justice, conducted for UNDP by a team of international experts. The Conference will also propose a strategy for future action in the field and announce future activities under the Transitional Justice Project.
