Graduate Programme in Gender Studies

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies CIPS of the University of Sarajevo, opens the competition for entrolment into the first generation of "Gender Studies" Interdisciplinary Graduate Programme. The deadline for application expires on September 15, 2006 for B&H citizens, and foreign students may apply until July 7, 2006.
"Gender Studies" is a two-year, graduate, interdisciplinary Masters Programme. It aims to educate the students about the methods, theories and concepts necessary to study gender and understand the contemporary debate held in this field. The students shall acquire knowledge about general and specialized contexts related to gendery study, and about the manner of implementation of research and surveys inside this field. The Programme should also contribute to the establishment of a network of experts, prepared to work in domestic, regional, international, governmental and nongovernmental, academic institutions, which have the mutual motive to promote gender research, interdisciplinary expertise in the field, and gender equality in their respective communities. The structure of lectures and selection of lecturers emphasizes this regional approach to gender studies. Lecturers and Topics The faculty consists of university professors, experts in the field of gender studies, representatives of international and local governmental organizations and NGOs. In addition to teaching staff of University of Sarajevo, lectures will be given by visiting professors from a number of universities from the region, EU and the world. The studies will include the following topics: Gender theory; Gender, Ideology, Culture; Gender, Human Rights and Mechanisms for implementation and protection of human rights; Gender and Politics; and, Gender and Development. Application The applicants need to have completed their university degree (average grade of 8.00 or the adequate average grade with other systems of grading), active knowledge and fluency in one of the official languages in B&H (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbia) and English; to be highly motivated; and good computer skills. An adequate working experience can be an advantage. There are no restrictions in terms of nationality and citizenship of the applicants. The Programme will accept between 30 and 35 students. The selection will be conducted by the Graduate Studies Academic Council, on the basis of presented applications and documents: (1) Certificate of passed exams to acquire university degree; (2) Curriculum Vitae, in English; (3) Letter of Motivation; (4) Certificate to prove the active knowledge of English; (5) two letters of recommendation. There is also a possibility to ask the candidate to appear for an interview. All the previously listed documents have to be submitted to the Centar za interdisciplinarne postdiplomske studije Univerziteta u Sarajevu, Zmaja od Bosne 8 (Univerzitetski kampus), 71000 Sarajevo, Bosna i Hercegovina. The Programme is planned to start in October 2006. The lectures will be given on weekends, in CIPS facilities. A group of donors will cover the tuition and admission costs for the first generation of students.
