Educational Programme for Collectors of Material for Recycling

The Care International in SCG and the Democratic Association of the Roma started the first educational programme for collectors of materials for recycling. The programme consists of three-month series of trainings in the fields of occupational protection, traffick regulations education, sorting of waste, technology for recycling of waste plastics and paper and environmental protection.

The programme is intended for collectors of recycling materials – members of "Eko Servis" cooperative. The cooperative was established in December 2004 and is the first and the only such operation in the region. Eko Servis is a unique form of professional association of collectors of recycling materials.

"Having in mind the fact that there are 2,000 Roma families in Belgrade only, with over 10,000 members who provide their daily living through collection of recycling materials, we believe that a long term sustainable and development model of cooperative organization should get due attention", reports the Democratic Association of the Roma.

The association estimates that the programme of training, as well as the activities of the Eko Service could serve as a model of good practice for achievement of the goals of the Roma Inclusion Decade and the Poverty Reduction Strategy.

The training was started under the auspices of the Programme for Assistance to the Roma in Serbia, implemented by CARE SCG and the Democratic Association of the Roma, under the sponsorship of the European Agency for Reconstruction.
