IDENTIFY! Appeal Posters in Dubrovnik

The Ars Aevi Centre for Contemporary Arts from Sarajevo and the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) presented, last Monday, May 8, the series of appeal poster “Identify!” (Srebrenica: Podrinje Identification Project) in Dubrovnik, at the facilities of the Otok Gallery, ran by the Lazareti Art Workshop. The posters were created by the Ideology Creative Team from Sarajevo.

The exhibition was organized under the post-graduate seminar “War Crimes, Genocide and Memory”, held at the Dubrovnik Interuniversity Centre (IUC), May 7-14. The seminar is organized by the University Centre for Interdisciplinary Post-Graduate Studies from Sarajevo and IUC. This is the third year of cooperation between CIPS Sarajevo and Lazareti.

With the aim to open the question of identity and identification of genocide victims in Srebrenica once again, the preparations of the project included creation of “Identify!” posters. Photographs of twenty items of clothing worn by the Srebrenica victims were selected from the “Podrinje Identification Project” Photo Books I and II, which were leter integrated in the context of the visual surfaces of the project.

The posters were exhibited on billboards all over Sarajevo in June 2005, to mark the 10th Anniversary of the fall of Srebrenica. Thousands of postcards with reproductions of the posters were distributed in the country and abroad. The concept of selection of clothing items, with special care given to clothes carrying the brand-nems of prominent European and international cloths makers, indirectly emphasize the phenomenon of social and psychological basis for processes of mass compassion and identification.

The “Identify” Project’s messages are multi-faceted: identify – recognize oneself in the suffering of your neighbours; identify – recognize the fact that collective indifference towards the pogrom of non-Christian population in Europe repeats itself; identify – recognize the lack of sense of the signs that “help” us feel close to the fellow man...

The project was organized by the ICMP, its Podrinje Identification Project, the Federal Commission charged with searching for Missing Persons, the ICRC, the Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Movement of the Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Zepa” (Sarajevo), the Women of Srebrenica Association (Tuzla), the Mothers of Srebrenica (Srebrenica). The project was produced by the Ars Aevi – Ideologija.

The film screenings under the “Warcrimes, Genocide and Memory” Seminar are held at the Lazareti Art Workshop from May 8 to 14, starting at 20:00 hours.
