Internet Access in Student Dorm Rooms
According to “Vjesnik” daily of Friday, May 5, all 9895 students accommodated in the student dormitories in Osijek, Rijeka, Split, Varazdin, Zadar and Zagreb will have internet access in their dorm rooms, starting at the beginning of new academic year 2006/07.
This is a result of the agreement on the work of “Stage D – System of Local Computer Network in Student Dormitories (StuDOM)”, signed in late February by Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the University Computer Centre (Srce).
The aim of this project, according to the statement for the press issued by Ivan Maric, Deputy Director of Srce and projct leader, is to to connect the dorm rooms and joint facilities in all student dormitories in Croatia into the Croatian Academic and Research Network CARNet.
However, at this time no plans are made to equip the dorm rooms with computers, so that the students will have to take care of their procurement on their own.
”Access to the network, its services and contents will be given only to those students that are issued with electronic identity by their School and are listed in the corresponding directory. The project also established a system that will allow to identify and sanction violators in incident situations, such as copyright violations through download of films, music, etc.” emphasized Maric.
Fortunately, software tools are available today that allow the students to circumvent such control. One such tool is Tor, a tool that enables the user to fully prevent insight into the contents of data transferred through the network.
