Sustainable Tourism in Hotel Industry
The Ministry of Maritime, Tourism, Transport and Development completed the seminar on “Education of Hotels in Environmental Protection”, co-organized with the Croatian Centre for Clean Production and the Norwegian National Institution of Technology from Oslo.
The representatives of the Ministy emphasized that 60 percent of travellers visit Croatia primarily because of its natural beauty and attractions. They also emphasized that environmentally aware behaviour in hotel industry could lead to great savings of funds. Assistant Minister Kramaric presented the “Investments in Quality as Precondition for Success and Development” presentation, as well as a number of projects that could fall into the area of sustainable tourism: greenfield investments, golf tourism, etc. Goran Romac, Project Leader with the Croatian Centre for Clean Production, explained to the participants that the activities related to the project of education of hotel industry workers will last for one year, and the trainees will be introduced to methodologies of clean production and the fundamentals of the ISO14001 environmental management system. Elisabeth Walaas, the Norwegian Ambassador to Croatia, expressed her satisfaction with the organization of such a gathering and emphasized the importance of the environment and the services sector. She said that the environment is the most important resource that every country should preserve for the future generations. “With that goal in mind, we should act preventively and react timely at the very sources of pollution and integrate environmental care in all areas of our activities”, said Walaas in her address to the gathering. During the working part of the gathering, comparative examples and experiences of Croatian and Norwegian hotel and catering sectors were compared, among them the Hotel “Trakoscan” was compared with similar destinations in Norway. |
