New Projects for Protection of the Danube River

Danube Basin Countries
Danube Basin Countries
The project for Danube River Protection (DRP), i.e. Capacity building for implementation of projects designed to reduce release of organic and toxic substances and cross-border cooperation of the Danube countries was started in 2001, on the initiative of the Global Environment Facility and UNDP, with the aim to improve the quality of the environment in the Danube Basin.

The project emphasizes the role of the Danube countries and the fulfilment of their obligations under the Danube Convention.

The long-term DRP includes a wide variety of state, public and local institutions in all sectors, but also a number of NGOs from the countries along the river. The main tasks in the competition for financial support, assistance in the implementation of project activities and design of further activities are provided by the Regional Environmental Centre for CEE, through its country offices.

The REC office in Croatia published the results of its recently completed round of Danube Grants. Funding and grants were won by Environmental Association of Brod, the PBN Club from Zagreb, the European House Vukovar, and Hyla-Association for Study and Protection of Amphibians and Reptiles from Zagreb.

These associations will implement their projects with the assistance of many collaborators and partners, including local self-government institutions, communal enterprises, laboratories and similar associations and related experts.
