Citizens Not Confident in Institutions’ Ability to Prevent Violence in Family

About 60% of the citizens of Leskovac estimate that the competent state institutions are inefficient in processing of the criminal offence of violence in the family and that the state bodies lack the capacity to solve the problem, report the representatives of “Zenski Centar” (Women Centre) the results from a recent poll.

The poll was conducted by phone, on a random sample of 150 citizens. 61 percent of the polled identified male member , usually the husband, as the main thug in the family.

The majority of the polled citizens was informed about the SOS Line for victims of violence in the family working under the auspices of the Zenski centar – Leskovac, but only 11 percent actually knew the number.

Over the past ten months, over 200 victims sought assistance through the SOS phone, mostly women and children.

Two years ago, the Social Work Centre in Leskovac established the shelter for victims of violence in the family. During that time, over 60 women and children spent an average 15 days at the shelter, hiding from the violent members of their families.
