Vesna Skare Ozbolt, Minister of Justice in the Croatian Government, announced last Sunday, November 20, that she will propose changes in the Criminal Code, which will erase slander and libel as criminal offence in all cases of public expression, including journalism, works of fiction, scientific works and other activities.

Also, the general defamation offences will not be punishable by terms of imprisonment, but only fines would remain.

”After last several sentences pronounced for journalists and writers, it is obvious that the judicial practices don’t adhere to the fact that defamation through public expression has been decriminalized” said Minister Skare-Ozbolt.

She emphasized that for less serious offences, such as insult or defamation, for which an alternative fine was set in the Law, changes will be introduce to delete the incarceration provisions and leave only fine in place.

"These changes will put an end to the debate about the fact that defamation charges can put one in prison”, said Minister Skare Ozbolt.
