Nearly two thirds of the citizens of Serbia would vote for Serbia and Montenegro entry into the EU if a referendum was held tomorrow, finds the public opinion survey commissioned by teh EU Integration Office of the Government of Serbia.
The survey, conducted by Strategic Management Agency, at the request of the Serbian Government, shows that 64% of the citizens would vote for SCG membership into EU, 12 percent would be opposed, while 16 percent would abstain from voting.
In the previous survey, conducted in September 2004, 71 percent of the polled supported the EU membership for Serbia. Tanja Miscevic, the Director of the Government Office on EU Integration explains that the fall is due to the rising number of citizens that realize the the EU membership brings on the table not only benefits, but new tasks and responsibilities.
According to the last survey, 40 percent of the polled expect for Serbia to become a full-fledged EU member by 2010, equal portion believes that 2015 is the more realistic date, while one fifth (20%) expects for the membership to happen after 2015. (FSOE)
