Government Adopts the Draft-Law on Free Access to Information

The Government of the Republic of Macedonia, at its session of last week, reviewed and accepted the proposed Draft-Law on Free Access to Information of Public Interest.

The need for this Law is based in both the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia and the obligations resulting from the international treaties on various aspects of the issue of access to information.

The adoption of this Law will mark another important step towards the integration in the European Union, as well as in terms of the approximation of the Macedonian with EU legislation and observance of international standards.

The Government�s press release adds that the full and successful implementation of this Law will require a quality public campaign, designed to inform the citizens and other entities about their legal rights in terms of access to information of their interest.

The Law will secure the implementation of the Constitutional principle for guaranteed free access to information, as well as freedom to receive and transmit information, and also provide transparency and openness in the work of public bodies and administrative institutions.
