Slobodan Vuksanovic, Serbian Minister of Education and Sports, estimated today, answering the accusations that Serbia doesn’t protect the rights of national minorities, that Serbia takes good care of its minorities.

“Majority of the rights and interests of the national minorities are realized in the area of education. In the past year, the Ministry of Education and Sports have met literally all demands presented by the national minorities”, said Vuksanovic in a public statement.

Vuksanovic emphasized that quality school-books were secured timely, that the classes in schools with students from several national backgrounds have been expanded; the Roma students have been enrolled into the University and student dormitories in a short and urgent procedure.

'The curricula are adapted to the needs of the ethnic communities. They have the guaranteed education in their respective mother tongues, and the calendar of vacations and holidays has been adapted to the religious holidays of the national minorities”, he added.

Vuksanovic emphasized that the state built several schools and completed the adaptation works on a number of dormitories in multiethnic communities, and secured the education in the mother tongues for the teachers coming from the national minorities.

'In Vojvodina, Raska, Bujanovac, Presevo, Dimitrovgrad, the education of children from national minorities is conducted in compliance to the highers standards”, emphasized Vuksanovic. “Our work was recognized and commended by OSCE, the Council of Europe and UNESCO. Also, recently the representatives of the national minorities themselves said that ‘new era has dawned in the Serbian treatment of its national minorities”, concluded Vuksanovic. (source: RTS)
