Environmental Reporters Visit a Major Pollutant of Sava River
The OSCE Mission to SCG organized the “Writing Environmental News/Reports” journalism workshop in Sabac and Belgrade in beginning of August, in cooperation with the SEE Regional Environmental Centre REC, under the sponsorship of UNESCO.
The workshop covered the subject of the Sava River, which runs through four states of the former Yugoslavia, which makes the existing environmental problems very similar in nature. Therefore, there is a need to pay more attention to the reporting and public participation in decision-making processes on the integral and sustainable management plan for the Sava, as well as prevention of pollution. The reporters had the opportunity to discuss the problems of the Sava with representatives of Sabac Municipality, the local water supply company, environmentalist organizations and representatives of “Zorka Mineral Fertilizers” Company, which also provided them with a chance to tour the factory. The participants also had a meeting with members of “Greenpeace” and joined the promotion of use of renewable energy sources, and discussed the importance of the Framework Agreement on the Sava River Basin with officials from the Directorate on Water and Environmental Protection Bureau of the Republic of Serbia. This was a third of a series of workshops of the one-year OSCE programme “Reporting on the Environment”, which aims to provide the journalists with information on the contemporary concept of reporting on the environment and to set the standards of objective reporting on pollution in the region. |
