Cloth Vs. Nylon Shopping Bags

The campaign to replace the plastic with shopping bags made of cloth, sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, started last week with distribution of textile bags to the shoppers in front of “Vero” supermarket and “McDonalds” restaurant in Skopje.

'The campaign is directed at the strengthening of public awareness on the need for an engaged approach to the reduction of all burdens on the environment', said Zoran Sapuric, Minister of Environment.

He emphasized that the textile-made bags may be used more than once, which would also contribute to the avoidance of use of paper bags, which is in compliance with the global campaign for protection of forests.

The Macedonian Government adopted a new Law on Waste Management, which provides for a completely new system of waste management and sorting. Minister Sapuric announced that the campaign will continue in the other cities and townships in Macedonia, and will be expanded to other forms of waste plastic.

The Campaign is also supported by the Head of the European Commission to Macedonia, Donato Chiarrini, as well as Irene Hinricksen, the German Ambassador to Macedonia.
