CCHR Called on the Authorities to Protect the Children in Brezovica and Lug

The Citizens’ Committee for Human Rights (CCHR) demanded from authorities in all levels of Government to define and implement, without any delay, the measures to protect the children located in Children Homes in Brezovica and Lug from possible abuse and neglect.

CCHR also demands the appropriate psycho-social treatment for the children traumatized by past abuse and neglect, as well as immediate investigation and prosecution of the past cases of abuse that took place in the two institutions.

In addition, CCHR demands for a special independent body to be established, which should receive all reports of institutional abuse and supervise and inspect all public, religious and private institutions that house children without parental care.

The Committee insists that an analysis is conducted of the system designated by the community to take care of the well-being of children, identify and record the weak points and make the proper changes. Those responsible for institutional abuse and neglect should compensate the children for the trauma they suffered and the violations of their human rights.

CCHR says, in a public release, that the cases of abuse and neglect of children in Brezovica and Lug are the most shameful examples of violations of basic rights of the most vulnerable social group, the children without parental care.

The Police and the Prosecution Office are conducting investigation on the abuse of children at the Caritas-ran institution in Brezovica, as well as in the Centre for Education at Lug.

So far, the investigation has concentrated on the former housekeeper in Brezovica, on suspicion that he sexually abused a mentally challenged child in the period from 1995-1999, as well as on a 57-year old university professor from Zagreb, suspected of sexual abuse of several children from the Lug Centre.
