The trade unions continue their blockade of the gates of “Mother Teresa” Airport in Tirana. They protest the manner in which they were fired, without prior notification.
Rushit Rama, the President of the “Mother Teresa” Airport Trade Unions, says that the 300 employees were fired without any warning.
“Nobody asked us, contact us, and then we found out that we were all fired”, he said to the media. “It is not clear who gave the order, since we have never received any official decision”. Rama added that, according to the Law, the employees had to be informed at least one month before that they are being laid off.
The lay offs will continue after May 1. All 522 employees of the “Mother Teresa”, the only international airport in Albania, are going to lose their jobs, due to the concession contract signed between the Albanian Government and “Tirana Airport Partners” company.
“We have taken the airport without the workers and we don’t know what is going to happen to them, because this is not within our competences. It is the state that should take care of them”, - said “Tirana Airport Partners” representative. The concession agreement they signed with the Government awaits the Parliamentary vote.
Meanwhile, the Albanian Minister of Transportation, Spartak Poci, says that the company has taken over the airport and its actions depend on its competences and its strategy. He added that lay offs were expected, but that the Airport will need even more personnel due to the expected increase in the amount of passenger and cargo traffic that will go through the Airport.
Rushit Rama warned that, if the authorities fail to provide satisfactory explanation, the protests will continue inside the airport building, and will escalate to a full blockade of the functioning of the airport.
