Action Week 2005 – Get the Kids to School

Action Week 2005 – Get the Kids to School, scheduled to take place April 24-30, is organized under the Global Campaign for Education, organized annually by OXFAM (UK). The Campaign for Macedonia is coordinated by the First Children Embassy in the World – Megjasi.

The Campaign was presented at the press-conference held today at the NGO InfoCentre in Skopje, by Dragi Zmijanac, Megjasi Executive Director, Elena Damjanova, the Global Campaign for Education Coordinator for Macedonia, and Stefan Pleskonjic, the Child Ambassador, who appealed to all schools in Macedonia to join the March, to be held on Sunday, March 24, under the auspices of the Campaign.

Esma Redzepova and Kaliopi Bukle, Macedonian pop-stars, are expected to join the March and give their support for the Campaign.

According to the information available to Megjasi, over 1,500 children in Macedonia are deprived of thief basic right to education. In Skopje only, the number of children left to the streets and registered by the competent institutions, exceeds 250.

In addition to the Sunday March, the campaign will include other activities. So, children are expected to make doll ‘friends’ from paper, cardboard, cloth and other materials, which are to be signed later by public persons, as a warrantee of their continuing support to the cause to get the children back to school. Also, a visit is planned to the Office of the President of Macedonia, Branko Crvenkovski, who is also expected to pledge his full effort to contribute to this cause during his term in office.

The Campaign will include the elementary schools in Macedonia, as well as non-governmental organizations, who will join their efforts to raise the public awareness about the fact that a great number of children remain outside the education system.
