Attacked Girl ‘Looked’ Lesbian

The 20-year old M.B. was beaten up in Novi Sad by a gang of three skinheads, because she looked „lesbian to them” because of her short hair. This is another in a series of violent attacks on lesbians, gay me, bisexual and transgender persons in Serbia.

M.B. was passing through the park on her way home, when three youths, noticeably members of the skinheads movement, called her to stop. When she stopped, the young men yelled: „Wow, you are a girl. You are one of ’those’ – we should break your bones“. One of the attackers hit her in the head, and then she was thrown to the ground and kicked all over. After the thugs left, M.B. went home.

This is another in the series of increasingly frequent cases of violent attackes on lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender persons in Serbia.

The pilot-opinion poll conducted in February 2005 in Belgrade, Nis and Novi Sad, present some alarming data. Over 90% of polled gay men and lesbians knows of cases of violence on same-sex oriented persons, while 71 jof the total number (8%) have personally experienced violence, while over a half of the polled were attacked several times because of their sexual preference.

The Novi Sad Lesbian Organization – NLO protests and condemns this act of violence and calls on the institutions and authorities to react urgently, within their legal competences and prevent further spreading of prejudice, discrimination and violence over the LGBT persons.
