The Role of NGOs in Environmental Protection

Non-Governmental associations can have a crucial role in the process of public awareness raising about the environment.

These activities are particularly important in the countries of the Southeast Europe. They provide a great opportunity in the region for two reasons:

First, the majority of people in the region, especially in the poor transition countries, direct their efforts to the protection of their habitat and to sustainable management of their resources.

Second, the development of regional protection policies and legislation over the past decade are a direct result from the public appeal for safer and cleaner environments.

23.06.2008 Zelena Akcija (Green Action) environmental organization reacted to the announced cooperation of Cardinal Bozanić and Mayor Milan Bandic, on five different projects. Zelena Akcija focused on two of the projects – plans to build 2,500 apartments in developments in Strug on Žitnjak and the proposed Museum of Sacral Art in Nova Vesa.

World Water Day 2004, March 22, focuses on the theme: Water and Disasters. The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and the World Meteorological Organization have been charged with co-ordinating events on the day.
