More than half live along the coast, exposing them to the fury of rising seas. Bangladesh, featuring prominently in the report, is currently trying to recover from the Cyclone Sidr.

Paying farmers for environmental services in developing countries can go a long way in mitigating effects of climate change, while also benefiting the billion plus poor who depend on farming for livelihood, claims a recent report by the Food and Agricultural Organization.

The report, Up in Smoke, compiled by environmental groups, including Oxfam and Greenpeace, says rich countries must honour their commitments to renewable energy. India alone has the potential to provide 60% of its electricity using these sources by 2050. It also calls for rich countries to allow the transfer of green technologies to developing countries.

The latest analysis from Delhi based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) warns of critical levels of air pollution in the capital. The exponential growth of private vehicles, particularly diesel ones, has defeated the gains from its earlier CNG drive when diesel buses in the city were phased out to check pollution.

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has launched a national program to address post-consumer plastic waste. People are being told to segregate the plastic from other garbage to make recycle collections easier and to stop dumping them on roadsides.
