In the 1990s Macedonia had constituted a peaceful exception within the territory of former Yugoslavia: this had prevented it from becoming a source of conflict-related migrations. The 2001 internal conflict has overtly changed the situation: although the majority of refugees/IDPs has returned to the places of origin, thousands of persons still remain displaced.
