Cady also mentioned that the province remains under the UN patronage since 1999, i.e. after the eruption of conflict between the ethnic Albanians and Serbs that live in the area.

Zagreb, January 22 -- During the traditional Christmas Breakfast, and under the auspices of the “Sustainable Refugee and Deportee Return” Project, the non-governmental organization GONG implemented a campaign to collect books for the school libraries in Gracac and Donji Srb. Many donors from the fields of politics, media and civil society joined the campaign with their donations.

Yesterday, Serb Democratic Forum (SDF) organized a meeting in Vukovar. At the meeting, they discussed the issue of faster return of Serb refugees in Croatia and problems of working with refugee-IDP population with the representatives of Vukovar-Srijem District and the Executive Council of Vojvodina. Milan SImurdic, Ambassador of Serbia and Montenegro to Croatia, was also present at the meeting.

Banja Luka, December 12 -- The Danish Refugee Council, the Asylum Department (www.flygtning.dk) presented the project for cooperation between municipal governments and the civil society organizations. The project is titled "Capacity Building of Local Democratic Governance for Return and Integration of Refugees and IDPs,/" and its goal is to create lasting conditions for return and reintegration of refugees and IDPs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project is financed by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will be implemented by the Danish Refugee Council, communes in Danmark with larger communities of Bosnian refugees and four cities in B&H: Banja Luka, Trebinje, Prijedor and Gradiska/Bosanska Gradiska. The presentation was held at the Banski Dvori Palace in Banja Luka.

(New York, December 10, 2003) — More should be done to address the plight of Kosovo Roma refugees in Macedonia, Human Rights Watch said in a briefing paper released today. The Macedonian government, its Western counterparts, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) should redouble efforts to ensure them dignified living conditions.

“Igman Initiative” is an organization that gathers over 140 NGOs from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbian and Montenegro and Croatia. They recently established an experts' group for preparation of model for reconciliation in the region. We talked to Vehid Sehic, the President of the Citizens' Forum Tuzla.

The UK Government is diverting the flux of asylum seekers to alternative destinations in the Balkans. A secret asylum seekers center was allegedly built in Croatia with this purpose. Human rights activists have already called for the respect of relevant international agreements.

A large group of Kosovo Roma has been stopped a few days ago at the Greek border with Macedonia. Roma were attempting to cross the border to seek refuge into Greece, but Athens denied such right alleging that the conditions of Roma in Kosovo are not to be considered of particular concern.

Life in Raca collective center where 4000 people of different ethnicities are cohabitating since 1999. The inhabitants of the centre show the willingness and demonstrate the possibility of living together, inspite of the persistent difficult living conditions.
