22.04.2004 The trial for the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic continued yesterday at the Special Department of the Belgrade District Court, after the surprising appearance of the members of the Gendarme Service of the Ministry of Interior, former members of the Special Operations Unit. Thejy came to the Court wearing t-shirts with the emblems and insignia of the “Red Berets” (the popular name for the Special Operations Unit), which were disbanded during the “Sabre” Police Operation, because of the accusations that several of its commanding officers were involved in the assassination of Prime Minister Djindjic, but also in the murder of the former Serbian President Ivan Stambolic. The Special Operations Unit members were also involved in the two assassination attempts on the then opposition leader Vuk Draskovic. Goran Radosavljević, Commander of the Gendarmerie, in his statement for Radio B92, said that he will talk to the five Gendarmes involved in the incident in the District Court, and that he will have information about any disciplinary procedure in a couple of days.
